Callum is one of our foreign teachers at Huajiang Branch in Shanghai and probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet! He arrived in China just as Covid hit and started his China adventure in a lockdown. This didn't deter him what so every though and he's certainly made up for lost time by travelling around China as much as he can now. Callum is our October Teacher of the Month!
Where are you from and why did you want to teach in China?
I am from a small village close to Edinburgh, Scotland. I decided that I would like to teach English in China after my trip here in 2017. When travelling around China, I met a lot of English teachers here at the time and after listening to their experiences, I decided that this was something I’d be interested in doing after university.
How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching since January 2020, so around 10 months.
What do you love most about living in China?
I love that there’s so much to do and explore. Shanghai has so many different areas to visit, but if you fancy a day or two away from the city it is so convenient to do so. The trains are cheap and reliable and so far I’ve managed to visit various cities on my days off.
What is your go-to game in class?
When teaching songs with my K classes, my go to game is always musical statues. They always seem to enjoy showing me their funniest poses. With the older classes, I tend to put the class into teams and play various team games like cowboy flashcards or speed spelling.
A word of advice for new teachers moving to China:
My advice for new teachers would be to put yourself out there and prepare for an awesome adventure. Try everything, make friends and most importantly have fun.
